5. Turkey Trot
Ah! on Thanksgiving day, when from East and
from West,
From North and from South, come the pilgrim and
guest,
When the gray-haired New Englander sees round
his board
The old broken links of affection restored,
When the care-wearied man seeks his mother once
more,
And the worn matron smiles where the girl smiled
before.
What moistens the lip and what brightens the eye?
What calls back the past, like the rich Pumpkin
pie?
—John Greenleaf Whittier, U.S. poet.

A. A Thanksgiving Day to rejoice in the end of the hurricane season
QQ: The Virgin Islands observe a Thanksgiving Day on Oct. 25 to rejoice in the end of the hurricane season. That is certainly something to celebrate alright!
2. When does the legal holiday of Thanksgiving Day fall on American calendars?
C. The fourth Thursday of November
QQ: No Americans better have missed this question!
3. How did the Thanksgiving cactus get its name?
C. It blooms around Thanksgiving
QQ: A Brazilian epiphytic cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) having irregular flowers and jointed flat stems with sharply serrate margins. Also called crab cactus.
4. Although its actual origin can probably be traced to harvest festivals that have been traditional in many parts of the world since ancient times, America’s Thanksgiving Day tradition can be traced back to what groups?
A. Puritans and Wampanoag tribe
QQ: According to tradition, the first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 by the English Pilgrims who had founded the Plymouth Colony, now in the state of Massachusetts. The Pilgrims marked the occasion by feasting with their Native American guests—members of the Wampanoag tribe—who brought gifts of food as a gesture of goodwill. Gradually the custom prevailed among New Englanders to annually celebrate Thanksgiving after the harvest.
5. Where did turkeys come from?
C. South America
QQ: Turkeys weren’t introduced into Europe from the Spanish colonies in South America until 1523. However, by 1524, turkeys, imported from South America, were eaten at the court of King Henry VIII of England.

QQ: Analysis of bones found near the present-day western Texas town of Midland suggests that humans lived in the area as early as 15,000 years ago. A well-developed society existed in the wooded areas of eastern Texas. Abundant rainfall allowed the inhabitants, whom archaeologists call Mound Builders, to raise corn, beans, squash, and tobacco. They built houses of poles, thatch, and mud plaster. They made beautiful pottery and used stone implements. Several mounds, each about 12 feet high and 150 feet long, are thought to have been made by these prehistoric people.
