7. Theme Quiz Answers

11. In May 1930, Englishwomen Amy Johnson won a prize of 10,000 pounds sterling when she landed in Darwin in her De Havilland Gypsy Moth biplane. What was the prize for?
D. First female pilot to solo from England to Australia
QQ: The Daily Mail, a British newspaper, had offered the prize for the first women to fly the solo trip on the English-to-Australia run. Amy Johnson completed the journey in 19 1/2 days. During the flight, she also set the record for the fastest time from London to India, taking just 6 days to cover the distance. In her cockpit, she carried tools, spare parts, tyres, inner tubes, clothes, a sun helmet, mosquito netting, a first aid kit and a long knife for sharks.

12.What does supersonic mean?
A. Faster than the speed of sound
QQ: Supersonic means, "Greater than the speed of sound." The first major hurdle for these aircraft was to exceed the speed of sound and return to a safe landing. Air Force Captain Charles E. (Chuck) Yeager was the first to accomplish this feat while flying the Bell XS-1 #46-062 on October 14, 1947. At the time, the event was considered to be such a significant accomplishment that the fact that Mach 1 (the technical term for the speed of sound) had been exceeded was declared "Top Secret" and was not acknowledged until reports were leaked to the press several months later. Since then the story of that first flight has been told repeatedly in articles, books and movies. Now, over forty three years later, most people uninterested in aviation history have little or no knowledge of early research aircraft other than the X-1 and virtually no name recognition for any of their pilots other than Yeager.

13. The Concorde holds the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic. What was it?
A. 2 hours, 54 minutes
QQ: The flight was done in two hours, 54 minutes and 45 seconds, from New York's JFK airport to London Heathrow.

14. In February 1908 the Wrights reach an agreement with the United States War Department to deliver a two-seat aircraft for $25,000. Who did the Wrights deliver the aircraft to?
D. U.S. Army
QQ: From June 29 to July 30 1909 the Wrights deliver their new Military Flyer to the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Meyer, Virginia, and put it through the required trials. The Army accepts the flying machine which becomes the first military aircraft in the world.

15. What was the name of the first commercially-sold airplane in America?
A. Golden Flier
QQ: On June 16, 1909, Glenn Curtiss delivers the Golden Flier to the Aeronautic Society of New York. It is the first commercially-sold airplane in America.

9. Bonus Trivia

"For most Northerners, Texas is the home of real men. The cowboys, the rednecks, the outspoken self-made right-wing millionaires strike us as either the best or worst examples of American manliness. … The ideal is not an illusion nor is it contemptible, no matter what damage it may have done. Many people who scorn it in conversation want to submit to it in bed. Those who believe machismo reeks of violence alone choose to forget it once stood for honor as well."
-Edmund White, U.S. author

16. The original Native American settlers who lived in Texas greeted the first European explorers in what way?
D. Peacefully as allies
QQ: When the first European explorers arrived, they found that the settled, agricultural Native Americans living in Texas were usually peaceful. The Spaniards were greeted with the word techas, or allies. The Spanish pronounced the word as Tejas (Texas), and adopted it for both the area and the people. These people lived in small villages with 7 to 15 dome-shaped huts. They were accomplished farmers and raised many different crops. Deer, bears, and fish were plentiful, and these peoples sometimes made long trips to hunt buffalo.

17. What is the capital of Texas?
D. Austin
QQ: Austin is the capital of Texas. Houston is the largest city.

18. The Fredonian Rebellion made the Mexican government nervous. Which is NOT one of the actions they took to prevent further trouble?
C. Forbid the speaking of English
QQ: Realizing that there were more Anglo-Americans in Texas than Mexicans, the Mexican government stationed Mexican troops there, and passed a law that restricted further Anglo-American immigration and prohibited the importation of slaves.

19. Despite its long tenure in Texas, Spain had only three settlements between the Rio Grande and the Sabine rivers before Mexico gained its independence. Which was NOT one of those three settlements?
B. Austin
QQ: Although Spain had claimed Texas for more than 300 years, there were only three settlements between the Río Grande and the Sabine rivers: San Antonio, Goliad, and Nacogdoches. Spanish officials realized that more settlers were needed to prevent other countries from trying to claim the land.

20. How long did the Republic of Texas exist before becoming part of the United States?
B. 10 years
QQ: The Republic of Texas, which existed for almost ten years before becoming part of the United States, was beset by many problems, principally financial ones. Although the new republic was recognized by the United States and by several European countries, Mexico refused to recognize it, arguing that the treaty signed by Santa Anna claimed territory that was not part of the original state of Tejas. Finally, in February 1844, the Republic of Texas and Mexico signed an armistice.
